Reader's Digest Christmas Trees

Trip down Memory Lane

I remember way back when I was little, we would make the rounds during the Holidays. It seemed, at everyone’s house there was those Christmas Trees that you could hand make from a Reader’s Digest Magazine or a TV Guide. They were all colors, dark green, bright red, gold and silver. Some had lots of glitter, so much you almost couldn’t see the color underneath. Others had sequins, instead of glitter, and all had a little jingle bell on top as the star. I don’t know if it was because I was too young to actually make one of those Christmas trees, or I was to shy to speak up and say I wanted to make one, but in the end, I never did. Time flashed by and when I was old enough to try to make one on my own, I had forgotten all about it. Probably because no one was making them anymore. I never saw another one again.

As I was thinking about writing today, my mind for some strange reason, thought about those Reader’s Digest Christmas trees, and the urge, the need, to make one, over came me. I hunted around the house and found a Prevention Magazine that was about the same size as a Reader’s Digest. I started creasing the pages, and after about an hour, I had completed my first tree. I dug around the garage for a can of spray paint and came up with a can of gold and walked outside to finish up something that I should had done in my childhood.

I showed my family when they got home. No one was too impressed. It was homemade, old-fashion looking, and the world had progressed a lot since, and as I took another look, I saw that it came across as something that only a little kid or a grandma would do. Nonetheless, I was happier for it and satisfied I had finally made my tree. Now, I just had to get my grandchild to come visit so we can make another one.

Thank you for this! I have great memories of this craft as well. I've been saving our old Reader's Digest for this craft, thank you! Wasn't there also a Reader's Digest bell? Does anyone remember the folding pattern for that?
